Since most of Cape Verde's islands have low hills, there are great hiking opportunities. The interior of Santo Antão Island, especially up the Ribeira Grande Mountain, is one of the best trails in the country, offering a full day’s trek. To get there, one has to drive approx.10km south of the town of Ribeira Grande, which is on the northeastern coast. The islands of Brava and São Vicente also have excellent hikes.
There is also some good windsurfing to be found, especially from January to March, when the ‘brume’ wind from the Sahara desert on the mainland blows across the islands. Scuba diving can be enjoyed in the clear turquoise waters around the islands. Recently the government has drawn up plans to include some of the shipwrecks around Cidade Velha near the capital Praia in scuba diving tours. Big-game fishing is also catching on as a popular activity.
