Congo Republic: Tourist Safety Guide

By news desk on July 19,2007

Yellow fever International Certificate of Vaccination is mandatory for all travellers over 1 year of age, irrespective of where they are coming from. Cholera, rabies, malaria, tetanus and typhus are the infectious diseases to guard against – vaccinations and prophylaxis are recommended. Please consult a GP and take his advise regarding the protective measures to be taken.

Keeping in mind the fact that the Congo is a country only just emerging from the throes of civil war, medical facilities are poor and infrastructure sadly lacking. In the smaller/rural areas, medicines are perennially in short supply and hospitalization / specialized medical care needs evacuation abroad or to the capital Brazzaville. Comprehensive medical insurance is important and is strongly recommended.

The urban centres are safer than many parts of the southwest Congo where rebel militias remain a threat to the safety of travellers. Travel to these regions is not recommended. In the cities, the main danger to travellers is from gangs of armed ex-militia men now passing time as roving bandits. While daytime muggings and petty theft are sporadic, night times are definitely not safe, especially in Pointe Noire and outside of Brazzaville.

All travellers to the Congo should steer clear of political demonstrations and rallies. Petty street crime, targeting foreigners is relatively rare, but nighttime mugging sometimes occurs, especially in Pointe Noire.
