Ghana has a fairly good health service. All regional capitals and major towns and cities have hospitals and clinics equipped with emergency, operation and basic facilities. The two teaching facilities in Accra and Kumasi are geared to treat special cases. Notwithstanding, health insurance, including medical repatriation, is a must. Herbal and psychic healing are also practiced. Malaria and cholera are serious health risks and adequate precautions should be taken. Tap water in cities is safe to drink, so say the Government.
Serious and life-threatening safety issues are few and far between. Petty thieving, purse snatching and various scams are common. When buying gold or silver jewellery, make sure you are not being cheated into buying fake stuff. Handle cash discreetly and out of sight to avoid being the target of theft. If you are making a business transaction, it is strongly urged that you contact your embassy or a local person of repute to check on the credentials of the person you are dealing with before you part with cash or make a commitment.
