Getting Around Ghana: Transportation Guide

By news desk on July 30,2007

By Air

Fights are available from Accra several times a week to Kumasi, Tamale and Tema. The airfare is affordable and the service is exceptionally good.

By Road

The government-run network of bus services connects most of the towns in Ghana and fares on these are very affordable. Though these buses are cheaper, their service is not dependable and it may be better to take one of the private bus services, which might empty your pocket a little but are very dependable. Cars are available for hire at all major hotels and at the airport. An International Driving Permit is recommended though not mandatory. Accra has extensive bus services and many taxis. The roads are in good condition with the occasional pothole here and there.

By Train

There’s only one train track in the whole of Ghana that runs in a single-track triangle around the country. The service connects Accra with Kumasi and Takoradi. The trains depart daily in either direction and have sleeping compartments or over-night sleepers. The service on the trains is good, though the train itself is slow but will get you to your destination.
