An Insight Into Liberian Culture

By news desk on August 01,2007

image

Tribal culture is prevalent in most of Liberia. The indigenous tribes have held on to their beliefs and traditions with zeal because they have felt threatened by the influx of the small community of slaves from America who resettled here. The Americo Liberians, as they came to be called, held the economy and governance in their control, until recently when the tribes wrested power.

The indigenous crafts are carving, particularly from sapwood, camwood, ebony, mahogany and stone. Ritual masks, batik and embroidered clothing are widely available.
