Tripoli Travel Guide
Perhaps the most interesting of all Libyan cities, this ancient city on the North African Mediterranean offers a pleasant blend of the old and the new. The old part of the city – the medina – is full of winding streets filled with smells and sounds of open-air shops and craft workshops, watched over by crumbling Roman walls and historic monuments. The new part of the city, maintained by oil wealth, is compact and easy to get around in. Tripoli also boasts a buzzing, newly revived arts scene and some excellent museums and libraries. Its residents are known for their finely honed sense of hospitality and are very proud of their city, which they refer to as "Arous Albahr Almotawasit" or "The Jewel of the Mediterranean". So arm yourself with a cup of aromatic Arabian coffee and lose yourself in this long-locked up land.
