Lake Malawi offers many kinds of water sports to enthusiasts like diving, scuba diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, kayaking and sailing. Other choices before active travellers are safaris, bird watching, horseriding, trekking, mountaineering, hiking or walking on the 1-6 day wilderness trails. Mount Mulanje is the highest mountain in Central Africa at 3000m and offers an irresistible challenge to most climbers. The massif has the longest sheer rock face in Africa that is really great for rappelling and rock climbing. Dedza, south of Lilongwe, and Michiru Ndirande and Chiradzulu, near Blantyre are the other slopes good for climbers.
Special Events
Dance plays a part in most ceremonies in Malawi and these dances are best enjoyed when performed at special occasions. Gule Wamkulu is the ceremonial dance of the Chewa tribesmen who dance it wearing heavily carved masks, feathers and skin paint. Most of the national dances can be seen at the annual Malawi Republic Day celebrations held the first week in July.
