You require a yellow fever vaccination certificate to travel to Mali. Prophylactics for yellow fever, cholera, hepatitis A, meningitis, typhoid and malaria should be taken in consultation with a doctor before travelling to Mali. All of these, including bilharzia and dengue fever, are endemic in Mali. Carry a supply of medicine to last your stay because Mali may not have regular supply of pharmaceuticals. You will be charged in advance for any medical treatment while you are in this country. A comprehensive medical insurance is suggested for travel to Mali.

Crime in Mali is restricted to minor incidents of pick pocketing and theft. It is best to be aware of your surroundings, keep any signs of obvious wealth such as jewellery or flashy watches and cameras out of sight, remain in groups and avoid poorly lit areas. The border roads of Mali and Mauritania have seen a lot of carjacking, armed robbery and banditry in recent times. Unnecessary travel out of Bamako, the capital city, is an absolute no-no.
