Mali Habitat Guide

By news desk on August 23,2007

Mali is a landlocked country in West Africa bordered by Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Niger and Liberia on the east, Senegal and Guinea to the south, Mauritania to the west and Algeria in the north. It is one of the largest countries in Africa with very few people per square mile.

The northern region of Mali is almost wholly Saharan desert. The southern region in contrast has enough rainfall to enable agriculture without irrigation. In between these regions is a wide area of semi-arid desert, called Sahel, and agriculture here is dependent on the flooding of the River Niger. The Niger River also provides an efficient way of travelling through the country.
