When in Mozambique, visitors are spoilt for choice as the restaurants and cafes offer the best of international cuisines from Asia, Africa and Europe. The local cuisine is a blend of Portuguese, African and Far Eastern influences. Local specialties are piri-piri chicken, Zambesi chicken, sea food and shellfish, including the superb Delagoa Bay prawns grilled and served with hot piri-piri sauce, matapa – a sauce of ground peanuts and cassava leaves served with rice or wusa, a porridge like dish made from maize. The better restaurants and bars serve fine wines imported from Portugal and South Africa as well as beers and other alcoholic drinks. The capital Maputo has a thriving nightlife with the bars and nightclubs open till late at night and till the wee hours of the morning on weekends. African groups play non-stop music, both traditional Mozambican and western popular numbers adding both rhythm and colour to the lively atmosphere in the discos, bars, clubs and pubs. Theatres host performances in Portuguese and cinema houses screen African, Portuguese and Hollywood films.
