At first sight, Lagos does not have much to recommend it – traffic jams, pollution, crowds and holy chaos as far as the eye can see, and the crime rate here would put the back alleys of Harlem to shame. Worse, much of petty crime in Lagos takes place in broad daylight and targets tourists. Okay, so it’s not your average tourist-friendly haven. But it is the virtual capital of one of the most interesting countries in Africa and presents no insurmountable challenge to hard-nosed city slickers from anywhere in the world.
Once you scratch the seamy surface, you cut to the very heart of urban, multi-ethnic Africa where beer-guzzling yuppies driving flashy foreign cars try to out-shout fellow countrymen dressed in tribal finery. The city also boasts a wide range of restaurants serving international cuisine and some good museums. Remember that there’s never a dull moment in this city – take the necessary precautions against crime and you should hopefully take back some great memories.
