Reunion Island Tourist Entertainment Guide

By news desk on August 27,2007

Réunion has a number of excellent restaurants that serve good French cuisine, Creole specialties like rougail (seafood with sauces) and many unique caris made from duck, eel and octopus curry (zourite). Vegetarians can try Bredes, a delicious local vegetable rather like spinach. The strong French influence has generated the bar and café culture, and attractive open-air places are extremely popular with residents and visitors alike. Seaside restaurants serve authentic local cuisine - a mixture of Chinese, African and Indian cooking, and traditional Indian cuisine appears on the menu, under the heading ‘massalés’ alongside dishes from Chinese, specifically, Cantonese cuisine. Arab style sweet coffee or French café au lait, French and locally made red and white wines and liqueurs, good local beers and rum are the much favoured items on the beverages section. ‘Rhum arrange’ is a deliciously fragrant concoction made from white rum flavoured with vanilla, orchids, aniseed and cinnamon. Réunion has the most active and varied nightlife in the Mascarene group of islands. Theatres, nightclubs, casinos, pubs, bars, cabarets and floorshows – name it and Réunion has it on offer. Local music groups put up live performances of reggae, segae and malogue.
