Recommended Excursions In Reunion Island

By news desk on August 27,2007

Réunion Island caters for the avid sportsman, the dedicated angler, the keen trekker and the adventurous tourist. Popular outdoor pursuits include abseiling down waterfalls, in canyons, trekking, hiking, paragliding, horse riding, and mountain biking. The coral reefs in the offshore waters in the Sous la Vent around St Gilles attract scuba divers while surfers come from all over the world to St Leu to catch the famous ‘left hand waves’. Trout was introduced into the rivers and streams on the island and Takamaka Falls is a particularly good spot for fishing. There are over 600km of footpaths crisscrossing the island, traversing it from the beaches to the mouths of the volcanic craters. These paths have been developed and sign posted by the National Forestry Office for the convenience of walkers. And after a hard spell of action packed activity, visitors can go up to the Cirque Cilaos to unwind at the many spas in this mountain resort. But the high point of a visit to Réunion is most definitely a climb up the slopes of the ‘Piton de la Fournaise’, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. The volcano remains in a state of intense activity, as the lava simmers, seethes, hisses and smokes away till it erupts. The last two important eruptions occurred in 1986 and in 1992, although the lava flow from the second eruption stopped well short of the coast.
