Johannesburg Shopping Guide
Johannesburg has the advantage of being the rapidly developing and ever-changing non-official capital of an amazingly ethnically diverse country, with the result that it is a treasure house of both traditional and modern merchandise. It also has a large number of interesting flea markets, where one can lose oneself in for hours, picking up anything from umuthi medicine cures to Congolese masks and statues. Some of these are - Art Africa in the northern suburb of Parkview which has a good selection of innovative and items, many ingeniously crafted from recycled material; Diagonal Street, CBD, reputedly the best place in South Africa to buy Sotho blankets, and also good for umuthi medicine, and herbal cures; Market Africa, Newtown is the city's liveliest flea market, and is next to the Market Theatre; Rosebank Rooftop Market has an amazing variety of cottage-industry crafts and clothes. Johanna also probably has the largest number of malls and music shops in the country.
