For the active traveller, Tanzania offers an endless variety of exciting things to do ranging from an African safari to trekking on the slopes of Kilimanjaro to snorkeling and scuba diving off the coast of Zanzibar to big game hunting and fishing.
Safaris: Tanzania's national parks and game reserves are amongst the best in Africa for viewing African wildlife in their natural habitat. Many tour operators organise guided safaris - by vehicle, on foot, on horseback or even by hot air balloons. Accommodation options can span an entire gamut from camps and tents to traditional African huts called rondavels but with all the luxuries laid on. For details, contact the Tanzania Tourist Board.
Mountaineering: For the mountaineering enthusiast, Africa's highest mountain Mount Kilimanjaro offers plenty of adventure, excitement and challenge. Tour companies organise guides, porters and equipment for the expeditions but it must be said that acclimatization and caution are absolutely imperative as the weather changes dramatically even on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Water Sports: Tanzania has 804km of coastline with superb beaches and coral reefs perfect for water sports. Scuba diving and snorkeling are particularly good around the islands of Zanzibar and Mafia, which have recently gained a high reputation amongst divers. Mafia Island has a protected marine park off Chloe Bay with an unbroken reef running the length of the island. Zanzibar and Mafia are also renowned for excellent deep-sea fishing, the best time for catching really big game fish is from September to March.
Spice Tours: Organised tours to Zanzibar's spice and tropical fruit plantations are the perfect introduction to the exotic aroma and taste of the famous 'Spice Island' as Zanzibar was known. Visitors can taste and buy spices, herbs and fruit.
