Getting Around Togo: Transportation Guide

By news desk on August 29,2007

By Train

There are three railway lines in Togo but only one of them is operative. It runs from Lome to Blitta via Atakpame. This train leaves Lome on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 6.30a.m and arrives in Atakpame around 1 pm and at Blitta by 6 pm and returns to Lome the next morning.

By Road

The important roads are sealed and are in fairly good condition except for a small stretch between Atakpame and Kara on the main north-south axis. You can rent a private car but the charges may be exorbitant.

Bicycles: The roads are generally in good condition and this may be the best way to explore Lome, as it reduces the time you are likely to waste at the various police checkpoints.

Minibus & Taxi: Togo has very good network of minibuses and most vehicles are in quite a tolerable condition but may involve a fair bit of bargaining as the operators levy surcharge on luggage. Rural roads are generally paved but maintenance is poor and driving hazardous with pedestrians and livestock often posing a real danger on the roads. Overland travel off the main network of roads will ideally need a four-wheel drive vehicle. Poorly marked armed checkpoints, often manned by renegade soldiers add to the danger as well as overhead expenses as you may have to pay your way past. Road travel after dark is definitely not advisable.
