Tunisia Tourist Health And Safety Guide

By news desk on August 29,2007

There is no threat of malaria, yellow fever or similar tropical diseases in Tunisia but Hepatitis A and typhoid fever are the two diseases to guard against. Both diseases are picked up from unsanitary food handlers and contaminated water sources. While in Tunisia, make sure you eat and drink only at clean establishments and stick to bottled water.

Hospital and medical services in Tunisia is available but limited; specialized care or treatment may not always be available. Language is another barrier to quick and correct treatment. Ambulance services are virtually unknown in the less developed towns and rural areas. Medical care is pretty pathetic outside major cities. While over-the-counter medications are available, travelers should bring with them a full supply of medications that they need on a regular basis.

Tunisia has a moderate crime rate in urban areas. Tourists are considered fair game by pickpockets, petty thieves and scamsters, so do be careful in crowded areas and don’t fall for any line spun to you. Caution should be exercised with valuables like cameras, wallets and hand baggage. Women travelling alone or in single sex groups are advised to remain in the well-lit and frequented areas to avoid harassment. Dressing conservatively can cut down on possible harassment.
