A fine system of transportation connects the different parts of the country to each other. The capital Tunis even boasts of a good metro transit system apart from the regulation buses and cabs.
By Air
Domestic airline operates the internal flights from Tunis to Jerba, Sfax and Tozeur. Though the domestic airports are far and few between, the distances are short and flying time is well under an hour to the destinations linked by air.
By Road
Tunisian bus service is excellent. The SNTRI operates daily air-conditioned buses to just about every place in the country. The services are fast, comfortable and air-conditioned and will not break the bank or overshoot travel budgets. In summer, the buses run at nights to avoid the high daytime temperatures. The efficiency of the service means they are always full, so book ahead, particularly in the summers.
"Louages", typical to Tunisia, are the long distance taxis that ply on a shared fare system. They are the fastest way to get around and only a trifle more expensive than bus fares. If you’d like to drive yourself around in Tunisia, it’s a good idea as petrol is cheap and the roads are good though the rentals are expensive.
By Train
The Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Tunisiens (SNCFT) runs the railway network in Tunisia. It does not link all parts of the country but it is modern and efficient, regular and punctual. The main line runs eight services per day between Tunis and Gabès via Sousse and Sfax.
By Sea
There is a 24-hour ferry service that stops at Jorf on the mainland and Ajim on the island of Jerba.
