Cholera, malaria, polio, typhoid and yellow fever are common diseases found in Zambia. Consult your GP for prophylaxis before you leave your country. Carry iodine pills to drop into your water before you drink it because tap water is not sterilised and has been known to cause cholera and typhoid Make sure you carry mosquito repellent while travelling to escape the mosquito bites. A health insurance is a must for travel to Zambia. Medical care is limited to the big cities and basic medical supplies are sometimes short in Zambia.

Zambia is a safe tourist destination but you have to take the usual precautions you would in any foreign country. Mugging is very common and it is wise to avoid carrying too much money or wearing flashy clothes and jewellery on your person. Pickpockets are common around the bus stations and city centres. If you feel you are being targeted, walk into a bank or shop. Travel to the Northwestern areas of Zambia bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola should be avoided due to the increasing violence in these countries. There have been armed incursions into Zambia from these countries. Please remember that you be conspicuous in rural areas and it is best to maintain a low profile there to avoid trouble.
