Beaches In Jamaica: A Guide

By news desk on June 25,2007

Strips of sandy white beaches, blue waters warmed by the sun, Jamaica has it all and much more. If the most important item on your ‘things to do list’ is acquiring a suntan, this is where you should be. From crowded beaches, dotted with bars, restaurants and people to quiet isolated havens, they’re all here – take your pick!

Montego Bay, Jamaica’s tourism hub has a lovely long coastline covered with white sand kissed by turquoise blue waters that are never too cold for a dip. Montego Bay has public beaches that have no facilities as well as private beaches that have restaurants, facilities such as boats for hire, snorkelling, showers and even a game of tennis. There is an entry fee for the private beaches. Dirty, with little opportunity for swimming, the beaches at Kingston can be quite disappointing.

About 64 miles from Montego Bay is Ocho Rios that claims to have some of the best beaches of Jamaica. The beach in the town is where all required equipment could be rented so you don’t have to go finding a shop.

If you’re looking for some peace and quite, Treasure Beach is the place for it. Still undiscovered by the milling crowd, its lack of popularity should not be a judge of its beauty. A stretch of four coves, covered by soft sand set against the background of craggy hills, treasure beach is the perfect getaway.
Negril on the Northwestern coast also has some lovely beaches.
