San Juan, the capital city of Puerto Rico is divided into the old quarter and the new city. In the old city, one can walk down the streets and admire the architecture of the old colonial buildings. Many buildings have been restored and are now heritage sites.
Visit the beautiful old churches and cathedrals or view the historic artefacts on display at the various museums in the city. In direct contrast are the glitzy steel and glass skyscrapers in the new quarter of the city.
Take a walk through the Botanical Gardens and marvel at the over 200 species of plants and flowers on display.
The city of Ponce has undergone a transformation. Streets have been cleaned up and declared no car zones; the garish colours of the houses have been washed away and they have been painted in soft yellows and pinks; museums have been refurbished and cathedrals restored.
A little away from San Juan, at La Parguera is the is the attraction of Phosphorescent Bay. Named so because there is a particular form of marine life in the waters here that gives out sparks of chemical light. It is best to visit here on a dark night so that you can see this phenomenon.
