Getting Around Puerto Rico

By Air:

The major tourist centres like Puerto Rico and Ponce are well connected by domestic flights.

By Road:

Car Rentals: Nothing can replace the flexibility and convenience of a private car. It’s however, not very safe to rent a car (check safety). There are a number of car rental agencies all over the island and prices are affordable. Foreign licenses are accepted for a month after which a national license has to be made. Tips on driving include avoid driving in urban centres and to keep a look out for local drivers who tend to be rather unpredictable. Driving is to the right of the road.

Buses: Minivans run between most towns, though you might have to change a number of buses if you’re covering a long distance. San Juan has a public transport system to which the orange, magenta and white painted buses belong. Bus stops are where you want them to be – hail a passing bus to step in.

Taxis: Available in abundance, all you have to do is hail an empty passing cab to reach your destination. Alternatively you can request the your hotel to arrange for a taxi. Insist that the meter is used otherwise the driver may try to rip you off. The concept of sharing a cab is very common and probably a safer option as well.

By Sea:

Public ferries run between Fajardo and the islands of Culebra and Vieques.
