Restaurants are aplenty. Costa Rica is not as inexpensive as its neighbours, a fact that enters the dinning scene. Atmosphere at restaurants tends to tilt towards formal. Cosy, serving delicious traditional menus, are small diners nicknamed ‘sodas’ where the right side of the menu is as appealing as the left side to the budget traveller.
Nightlife in the cities meets the expectations of the most jaded party lovers. San Jose has a vivacious nightlife – whether it is in the throbbing discotheques, crammed bars or relaxing movie theatres. The city also has a fairly large gay and lesbian community and offers plenty of entertainment for them. The beachside town of Jaco is known for its boisterous nightlife. The smaller towns don’t offer much more than a bar or two to enjoy a drink.
Shopping
Costa Rica offers a wide choice of handicrafts at the "Plaza de la Cultura" next to the Gran Hotel, in downtown San Jose. You can also browse through the National Handicraft Market for handmade ceramics, wood crafts, reproductions of pre Columbian gold and silver pieces and jewellery. For exquisite woodcraft, visit the picturesque town of Sarchi located in the Alajuela province, where you not only get bracelets, earrings or jewel boxes made of wood but the famed Costa Rican "oxcart". Most certainly, don't leave Costa Rica without its gourmet coffee! Some of the well known varieties are "Tico Hybrid", "Arabic", "Villa Sarchi", "Caturra" and "Mundo Novo".
