Getting Around El Salvador

By news desk on June 28,2007

image

By Air
There are domestic flights connecting San Salvador, San Miguel, La Union and Usulutan. But the size of the country (the smallest in Central America) renders air service useless unless you really are strapped for time.

By train
Railways connect San Salvador, Acajutla, Cutuco, San Jerónimo and Angiuatu.

By Road
Car rental services are available only at the airport or in the capital, San Salvador. An international driving license or a valid domestic license is required. However, away from the cities, the potholed and rutted roads make for a rather bumpy ride. In the rainy season, along with potholes, you have to deal with puddles and driving conditions are noticeably worse than in the drier season. Driving hazards extend to fellow local drivers as well as the animals that roam the area. Driving is to the right. Taxis abound most city streets.

The public transport system is surprisingly reliable as well as well organised. And very cheap. Most cities and towns in El Salvador are connected by a steady flow of buses. However, you might not always find a seat, as buses are usually crowded.
