Sanitation levels are not exemplary and this can cause many health problems. Water – borne diseases are common, so stick to bottled water. Mosquitoes are all over the place, so carry mosquito repellent. Cholera, dengue fever and malaria are some of the common health hazards.

Guatemala has a number of well-equipped hospitals especially in Guatemala City. Besides this, most hotels have in-house doctors. Medical facilities are difficult to find in rural areas.

The political instability is reflected in the crime rate. Incidents of crime are high and are on the increase. Don’t venture out alone at night especially in the larger cities. Avoid travelling between cities at night, even via a major highway. If you’re driving, don’t offer rides to hitch hikers.
