By Air
This is the most efficient and reliable way of getting around the country, as rains can often impair other means of transportation. There is a domestic network of flights connecting the various regions of Guatemala. Airstrips are paved out just about everywhere and if you like, private charter flights can be arranged.
By Land
You’ll find some international car rental companies and plenty of local ones in Guate City. Though there is an extensive road network, during the rainy season, these dissolve into dirt tracks or disappear altogether. If you’re planning to travel between major towns, you needn’t worry, as these are well maintained. Thefts and robberies are common. Driving is to the right. An international driving license is acceptable for a period of a month, else a local license is issued on production of your country’s national license. You can also hire a motorcycle but don’t ride around without a helmet.
There are taxis in the urban areas. Buses run between most towns and to popular tourist destinations. Most roads are in good condition though rains play havoc with their state.
