Local architectural style was influenced by Spanish fashion for around 50 years after independence. Now of course a complete transformation has taken place in building styles – they are truly modern. You can see some amazing examples of this on the campus of the Central University of Venezuela where imaginative murals and sculptures can be seen on radically designed buildings.
Petroglyphs reflect the creativity of the people before the discovery of Venezuela by Columbus. You can find carvings in around 200 places in the country. Churches and museums still have paintings of saints and carved wooden statues.
Popular folk rhythm here in the country is the joropo – they sing this with a harp, cuatro or maracas playing along. In the 1900s the country has seen some important artists and writers winning such as Teresa de Parra and the poet Andres Eloy Blanco. The best-known writer of course was Romulo Gallegos who served as the President of the country in 1948.
