All visitors to Hong Kong must have a passport that is valid for at least a month after the date of departure. In some cases this is a 6-month requirement. All visitors must also be able to show that they can support themselves financially during their stay, and must furnish details of return tickets.
All except the following require visas:
British residents are exempt if their stay is not more than 6 months long. (3 months for British protected persons, overseas citizens, citizens of dependent territories and British subjects.)
Citizens of Commonwealth countries are allowed to stay without a visa for up to 3 months. Citizens of Uganda, Samoa, South Africa and Sri Lanka are exempt only if their stay does not exceed 1 month, citizens of Bangladesh, Cameroon, Lesotho, India and Mozambique up to 14 days. Citizens from Grenada, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and the Solomon Islands are required to have a visa.
EU nationals are not required to have a visa if their visit is shorter than 3 months.
There are myriad other permutations and combinations: specific rules apply to almost every country and type of visa. Find out where you stand by enquiring with the Hong Kong Immigration Department, telephone – 28246111, fax – 28777711.
Applications for visas may be addressed to the Chinese Consulate or embassy in your city, the Hong Kong Immigration Department or the Hong Kong Economic Office. Three categories of visas are transit, tourist and business. Business visas may be obtained on showing a letter of invitation from a ministry, business firm or official in Hong Kong.
