Citizens of the USA and of most Western European countries are not required to have a visa to enter Japan, if they’re staying for less than 90 days. Everybody else must have a visa; it’s best to check with the Japanese embassy closest to home to find out whether you need a visa or not. Even if you don’t need a visa, it’s essential for you to have a valid passport if you’re to enter Japan.
