Sofia is Bulgaria’s only large city, and nearly all flights into the country land at Sofia’s international airport. The national carrier, Balkan Bulgarian Airlines, connects Sofia to a number of European cities and a few cities in North America, so if you’re coming in to Bulgaria from outside Europe, you’ll have to first take a flight to one of the European airports with a connection to Sofia.
Bulgaria has train and road connections to its neighbouring countries. Sofia is well connected by train and bus to Greece, Yugoslava, Macedonia, Albania, Turkey, the Czech Republic and some countries in Western Europe. Within the country, there are extensive rail and road connections leading to Sofia, which forms the hub of the entire transport network, so you shouldn’t have any difficulty getting to the city. Many tourists prefer to bring their own cars or use a hired car as public transport systems are often unpunctual and unreliable.
