Rila Mountains Travel Guide

By news desk on January 15,2008

image
The Rila Mountains are the perfect place to go if you want to go trekking- just 120 km from Sofia, they are largely unspoilt by civilisation. A large section of the mountain ranges is still covered with forests, and is excellent for getting away from the bustle and din of Sofia. Within the mountains is the popular ski resort of Borovets, and the well-known Rila Monastery. The Rila Mountains lie south of the capital, and can be reached by bus (there are regular buses linking them to Sofia ; the ride takes about 3 hours). Although it is possible to just about touch the mountains, get a feel of them and return to Sofia within a day, avid walkers and nature-lovers would do well to spend a day or two (at least) in the region. Boarding and lodging are available at the Rila Monastery, and there are camping grounds nearby too.
