Sofia Habitat Guide

Sofia is the capital as well as the largest city of Bulgaria and an economic and cultural centre. The city lies in western Bulgaria, near the geographical centre of the Balkan Peninsula, in the Sofia Basin - a valley ringed by the Balkan Mountains and other ranges. The older parts of the city are characterised by winding, narrow streets, and small houses jumbled close together. The old section of the city also has the ancient churches of St. George and St. Sofia. In contrast, the more contemporary sections of Sofia have wide avenues and high-rise apartment buildings. The city’s population has grown rapidly in the last decade, following a big wave of rural workers moving to Sofia in search of employment.
