If you’re keen on shopping in Bulgaria, Sofia is a good place to splurge, mainly because everything that Bulgaria produces- from attar of roses to carpets, fretwork and ceramics- is available in the capital. Vitosha Boulevard, one of the main streets in Sofia, is packed with shops selling handicrafts and local specialties. For arts and crafts, other places worth a visit are the Bulgarian Folk Arts Shop also on Vitosha Boulevard and the shop of the Union of Bulgarian Artists on Tzar Osvoboditel Boulevard. One of the most popular and the largest shopping districts in the capital is the National Palace of Culture- which has lots of shops, many selling jewellery, designer clothing, music and the like.
Large department stores are about the only stores in Sofia that accept major credit cards; elsewhere, local currency is the only form of payment that a shopkeeper will accept. Bargaining- to a reasonable extent - is accepted in smaller shops and street markets, but not in large stores.
