The city of Gdansk, also known (in German) as Danzig, is the capital of the Polish province of Pomorze, or Pomerania, of which it is the largest city. Gdansk lies in north-central Poland, along the shore of the Baltic Sea, at the mouth of the Vistula River. Together with the neighbouring cities of Gdynia and Sopot, it  forms an urban sprawl known as Trojmiasto (Tri-city).
The city lies along the Gulf of Gdansk, with the harbour stretching along the shore, in the lee of the Hel Peninsula.
