Polish law does not allow the export of anything that dates from 1945 or before; other than that, there are no restrictions on what you may buy- and there’s a lot to buy. Polish handicrafts, such as hand carved wood, glass, enamel, rugs and folk art make for great souvenirs, and are widely available in Gdansk’s many shops. The city’s specialties, however, are amber and silverware, both of which are to be found in virtually every single souvenir shop; most of them are along Ulica Mariacka.
Among Gdansk’s best known shopping centres is The Mill (at Radaunekanal), good for buying designer clothing; the Edeka Supermarket is for more everyday stuff, including food. For a closer look at the city’s traditional markets, head for the numerous marktbuedchen, the market halls of Gdansk. You may not end up buying too much, but it’s a great way to see Gdansk at close quarters.
