Krakow or Cracow- known as Krakau to the Germans- lies in Southern Europe and is the capital of the province of Krakow. The city lies on the banks of the Vistula river, in a green and fertile valley at the foot of the Carpathian Plateau. The city lies approximately 300 km south of Warsaw; about 100 km to the south lies the Polish border, marked by the Tatra Mountains.
