Romania: Tourist Health And Safety Guide
Make sure the water you’re drinking is bottled, mineral water. It is widely available and is called apa minerela. There are many pharmacies, especially in Bucharest, but you can never be sure you’ll get the same standard or products as in other Western countries. So think ahead and take along a medical/safety kit. Also, take along sufficient supplies of any scheduled medicines that your doctor may have prescribed you; take a copy of the prescription along too. It’s also a good idea to bring an extra tube of insect repellent, because these little creatures may give you company for much of the trip. Owing to economic hardships, jewellery theft and such are quite common in Romania: try to conceal valuables as much as you can. If driving, look out for potholes and vehicles without headlights at night. A torch or small flashlight for the darker alleys wouldn’t hurt either. In Bucharest, call 961 for an ambulance.
