The best dining experience is to be found in Bucharest – the capital has been experiencing a restaurant revolution, and new, stylish eateries have mushroomed all over the city.
However, style while dining doesn’t get too much attention outside of the city. Many places in other parts of Romania do not have fixed meal prices, nor do they offer a printed menu. This could mean good news if bargaining is your strength and passion, otherwise stay on the alert to make sure you’re not getting ripped off.
Popular foods are mititei, (seasoned grilled meatballs) and mamaliga (a dish with a base of cornmeal porridge). Typical drinks include plum brandy called tuica and wine, and and placente ciu poale in briu (cheese pies) is the ever-welcome dessert. The main meats on offer will be pork and beef.
For some imperial, high class and even nostalgic entertainment in Bucharest, buy yourself an evening at the Bucharest Athenaeum, main concert hall and home to the Romanian Philharmonic. Some good quality opera can be hoped for at the Opera Romano, as can some entertaining drama at the Theatre Nationale.
With tourism becoming increasingly important, Bucharest’s nightspots are growing steadily in number. If you want a typical Romanian night on the town, head out to Lipscani District and the smashing clubs there, filled with students and young people. You can also catch some good foreign cinema at the Cinema Patria.
