Historic Background Of Bucharest
Bucharest first came to prominence when it became a fortified settlement during the rule of Vlad the Impaler in the 15th century. This prince of Walachia, the Count Dracula of popular imagination, made the fort to ward off the Turks. His efforts notwithstanding, much of Walachia was under Ottoman suzerainty by the middle of the 17th century. Bucharest developed as a commercial hub in this new system and was declared the capital in 1659.It’s prominence, if anything, only grew and when in 1878 after the Russo-Turkish wars Romania became independent, it became the capital of Romania.Bucharest was occupied by German troops, during the First and Second World Wars. In 1944, Soviet troops ousted the Germans and their military programmes lasted till 1958.Bucharest has survived much natural disaster such as earthquakes as well as the ravages of constant war and bombing.
