There is some kind of eating places suitable for virtually all budgets and tastes in most towns and cities of Slovakia. If you’re a vegetarian- you might find the menu restricted to fried cheese and vegetables. Stand-up snack counters, cafés and small restaurants are quite common – they usually serve usual Slovak fare- roast pork, dumplings and sauerkraut. There’s an abundance of pubs where beer and wine can be enjoyed alongside some local food.

If you’re looking for fancy cuisine, you’ll have to restrict yourself to the larger towns and the more popular tourist destinations- those are the places where there are restaurants serving everything from Greek to French food. Most international cuisine available is continental, but Oriental, especially Chinese and American cuisines have started becoming popular.

Slovakia has a rich cultural heritage, and most places, even if they are no more than villages, will usually have some form of entertainment- folk dances, songs and the like- happening on a regular basis. Even fairly out-of-the-way restaurants generally have live shows, featuring local music and dance troupes. Other than that, local festivals are excellent showcases for folk talent- and if you happen to be in a town while there’s a festival on, you’re bound to see some good folk entertainment. 32 km from the city of Poprad, the Vychondna Folklore Festival is held every June or July, and it’s the perfect time to see folk dances from all over the country.

Besides that, there are classical and popular entertainments in the form of cinema, theatre and music concerts. Jazz is particularly popular- September is the time for the Bratislava Jazz Days; if you’re fond of rock, May or June is the time for rock concerts in the capital, during the Bratislava Lyre. There are a number of nightclubs and pubs too, especially in Bratislava, where the nightlife is quite lively.
