Although it is possible to hire a car from one of the car rental agencies in town, it’s really not recommended - trying to navigate the narrow streets of Brugge can be a nightmare, and any infringements of the law, no matter how minor, are treated with severity. You’re probably much better off hiring a bicycle either from the Baggage Depot at the railway station, or from a hotel, many of which have rental services. Many of Brugge’s streets are very conducive to cycling, and it’s a great way to see the city. Alternatively, you can use public transport: Brugge’s bus network covers most of the city and its environs, and a day pass, which allows unlimited travel on all buses, might be very economical. Other than the buses, there are taxis (available from ranks outside the train station and at Markt) and boats, which do regular runs along the canals of the city. A boat trip on one of Brugge’s canals is actually a `must-do’- the perfect way of seeing the city. Equally romantic are the horse-drawn carriages and the trams (originating at the Markt, t’Zand or the Burg), which tour the city. More information on public transport schedules, routes and passes can be obtained from the tourist office.
