Zagreb Habitat Guide

By news desk on January 18,2008

The city is strategically situated on the crossroad of important routes between the Adriatic Sea and Central Europe and spreads from the edge of the Medvednica Mountains to the plains of the Sava River. The city grew out of two medieval communities, Kaptol and Gradec. Zagreb has a pretty urban locale of old houses and new city blocks, cathedrals and churches, cobbled streets and quiet squares, green parks and walkways - the Baroque atmosphere of the Upper Town, picturesque open-air markets, smart malls and plazas, crafts and the choicest of local food. In spite of the rapid development, it has retained its charm, character and personality and boasts a relaxed ambience that makes it warm and friendly.

Modern Zagreb splits neatly into three parts. Donji Grad or "Lower Town", which extends up from the train station to the main square is the bustling centre of the modern city. To the northeast and the northwest are the older quarters of Kaptol and Gradec, both oases of calm in a thriving metropolis.
