Getting Around France: Transport Guide

By news desk on September 20,2007

By Air
Domestic air travel is convenient and there are flights all over France. There are flights to Cote d’Azur and the southwest area of France from Paris.

By Road
Travelling by road should remain your secondary option and only to out of town destinations. SNCF operated bus services will accept rail passes. The French term for bus station is ‘Gare routiere’. It is expensive to go by car, although the road system in France is excellent. This is because the toll costs are high, and so are the petrol and rental charges. Also, you are required to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local automobile association. An IDP is valid only with your original driving license.

By Waterways
There are numerous river routes and navigable canals in France that afford excellent opportunities for holidays. Houseboats accommodating between four and twelve people can be rented for a weekend or even longer if you so desire. River shuttles also operate within cities.
