Most festivals are held in summer. The world famous Cannes Film Festival is in May. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in Provence hosts a colourful gypsy festival in late May honouring Sarah, patron saint of the gypsies.
July 14 is celebrated as Bastille Day with fireworks and parades held throughout the country. Another enjoyable event taking place in July and with worldwide viewers on TV is the Tour de France in Nice that has music, parades and wine tasting as its main attractions. Nice and Nantes have a Carnival to celebrate in the last week or two before Ash Wednesday (finishing with Mardi Gras celebrations).
On the music front, the International Music Festival in Strasbourg (first three weeks of June); the fete du cinema in summer and the Jazz Festival in Nancy (9-24 October) are the highlights of the year. The mainstream and fringe theatre of the Festival d'Avignon is from mid-July to mid-August.
