Getting Around Crete: Transport Guide

By news desk on October 04,2007

A hired car or bike is easily the most convenient way of seeing Crete at your own pace, although you’ll have to face bad roads and winter landslides in the mountains. Cars and bikes, including mountain bikes, are available from rental agencies in most towns, although it might be a good idea to check out rates before you reach Crete. Some travel agents offer highly discounted car rentals as part of a package for travel to and from Crete.

A convenient long-distance bus network covers nearly all of Crete. Buses travel at intervals of half an hour throughout the day, leaving Heraklion for the other important cities of Crete- Rethymno, Hania and Agios Nikolaos. Bus stations usually have timetables displayed in English, but it’s best to crosscheck with the driver before the bus starts. All large cities have taxi services.
