Getting Around Serbia: Transport Guide

By news desk on October 17,2007

By Air

Internal flights are operated by JU (Yugoslav Airlines) between Belgrade and Podgorica. There are two flights daily both ways, and it’s convenient, if expensive.

By Train

There are trains connecting most of the country, but services are usually poor. Trains often do not adhere to fixed schedules and are unreliable. Worse still, violence and robbery- chiefly directed towards foreign tourists- have been on the rise over the past few years. If you want to save money or go on some of the country's most scenic journeys, then train travel is recommended, but please take precautions.

By Road

Cars are available for hire in larger cities - Belgrade, for instance, has a number of good agencies. However, roads are not in a good condition, and petrol may be scarce outside Belgrade and Podgorica. Alternatively, you could use the country-wide bus service. Once efficient and cheap, it’s now in a bad shape, mainly because of fuel shortages.

Within cities, bus services are relatively good, and taxis are available.
