Most of Ljubljana’s biggest events are scheduled for the summer months, when the city’s overflowing with tourists. The season usually kicks off in the beginning of June, with the Wine Festival and the Photo Antique Festival, both of which are followed by the Biennial of Graphics, a festival which continues till the end of September and is held every alternate year.
The most popular event, however, is the International Summer Festival, which begins in mid-July and goes on till the end of September- two and a half months of music, dancing, theatre, food and wine. Slightly shorter, starting mid-July and till the end of August, is the `Summer in the Old Town’ festival, when the squares of the old quarter become venues for cultural performances. The festival coincides with the International Jazz Festival, which is held in July.
After September, once the tourists have gone home, there’s a lull in the festivities, but around December, the city centre and the old town get decked up for Christmas. Christmas is the time for parades, street fairs and concerts of choral music in Ljubljana’s churches.
