Lucerne is a great place to sample some of Switzerland’s best cuisine. Most of Lucerne’s restaurants serve a wide range of fish dishes, all made from the daily catch, fresh from the lake. Typical Swiss food - cheese, fondue, rostii, confectionary, chocolates and coffee are available just about everywhere from fine restaurants to cafés and market stalls. If you want to try the local specialties, look out for the sumptuous Luzerner Kügelipastete, a concoction of veal, mushrooms and sauce encased in puff pastry and the delightfully alcohol and caffeine loaded pick me up known as Kaffee fertig (coffee with Schnapps). All across town are lots of cafés, restaurants and other eateries, where you’ll be able to find something or the other to suit your budget.
Lucerne’s nightlife is as good as it can get - bars, discos, nightclubs and pubs spread out all across the city offer everything from booze to live performances. In addition to the entertainment offered in the bars of the city, other venues such as the Congress Centre where performances of classical music, theatre, opera, ballet and folk arts are held regularly. For more information on what’s happening in the city, get hold of a copy of the Kultur Kalender, available at the tourist office.
