The medical services in Bahrain are excellent. There are general as well as specialised hospitals and the pharmacies are well supplied. Health Services are free to all citizens. Medical insurance is essential in cases of serious illness. As drugs are not sold over the counter, you must carry your own prescription with generic names of medications, and a letter from your doctor. Preferably, carry your own prescription medicine.
Cutaneous leishmaniasis, typhoid fever and hepatitis A and B are possible health hazards. Other health problems that occur are sunburn, prickly heat, heat stroke, fungal infections, diarrhoea, tetanus and sexually transmitted diseases including AIDS. You must check out what inoculations you need, six weeks prior to your departure. Water in modern Hotels is safe if they have filtration plants. Drink bottled water that is properly sealed. Eat only well cooked meat or fish served hot. Vegetables should not be eaten raw, and fruit should be peeled.
Though crime rate in Bahrain is low, you must take precautions like you would in any foreign country. Reckless driving is more likely to worry you. The Gulf region is not conducive to single women travellers. Women should stay in the better hotels, avoid flirting or even making eye contact with men, sitting in the front seat of the taxi, or wearing even slightly revealing clothes.
