No inoculations are required unless you are coming from a disease-affected area. But it is advisable to take preventive shots for cholera, hepatitis A, polio, tetanus and typhoid before travelling. As rabies is prevalent in Jordan, do take the shots if a dog bites you during your stay. It is strongly recommended that you get complete health insurance because medical treatment is expensive in Jordan. It is also advisable to carry a basic medical kit and generic names of your prescription drugs. Pharmacies are helpful for minor ailments and Medical Services are well developed in the larger towns Jordan - many doctors have been trained abroad and speak English fluently. The hospitals are well equipped for any emergency and many villages have clinics. If you wear glasses, it is always good to carry an extra pair and take your prescription along with you.

Jordan is very hot in summer and excessive exposure to the sun can cause severe sunburn and dehydration. Use a good sun tan lotion, wear a hat and sunglasses and keep yourself covered. Avoid excessive physical activity and alcohol consumption till you get used to the climate. Drink lots of water to avoid dehydration.

Jordan is quite safe for tourists but it is advisable to refrain from carrying large sums of money on your person or wearing flashy clothes and jewellery. To avoid taking risks, it is best to lock your valuables in the hotel safe, keep your car door and hotel room locked and avoid walking in unlit and lonely areas at night. Though Jordanian men are more liberal than their counterparts in other Middle Eastern countries, women tourists should dress and behave modestly. It is suggested that single women do not hitch lifts.
